The Institute is situated in the Schöneberg district, bordering Kreuzberg, whose best known building is the Town Hall, seat of the Berlin Senate (local government) during the division of the city. With its bell of freedom, a gift from the United States, it was the symbol of free West Berlin. John F Kennedy's famous political proclamation "Ich bin ein Berliner" was made here in 1963 in front of ½ million people.

Berlin is both the new and the old capital of Germany and is its most significant travel destination. The city which was divided for four decades is now growing together again, a smaller version of the historic process slowly taking place in Europe.

Compared to other European capitals, Berlin is relatively young - the city was founded only 760 years ago. Berlin today is a modern city with many faces. It is not only a multicultural metropolis but also a dynamic economic region, Germany's biggest university city and an important centre for research and development.

In the 20th century, Berlin has seen a series of dramatic changes. The decadent metropolis of the Golden Twenties became the centre of the national socialist dictatorship. Out of the ruins of World War II emerged two diverse cities: the capital of the first socialist state and, enclosed by the walls and no man's land, the "Showcase of the West". In 1968 Berlin shared in the protest movement sweeping Europe and in November 1989 it became a remarkable and historic gateway between East and West.

Traces of this turbulent history remain in scattered ruins around the city. Next to them entirely new city districts are springing up to become the future face and character of Berlin.

Berlin is Germany's greenest city - almost a third of it is forest or lake. The wide transport network of underground and overground trains, trams and buses is perfect for discovering the city and the surrounding countryside - and for reaching all major international stations and airports.

Every day thousands of visitors experience Berlin - Germany's liveliest city and the only one where there is no closing time.

To gain an impression of the innumerable cafés, bars restaurants, clubs, theatres, museums, galleries, concert halls and cinemas, you need to live in Berlin a long time. And even then there is always something new to discover. Two of the most popular areas for young people are the districts of Kreuzberg and Prenzlauer Berg.

Kreuzberg is Berlin's smallest district. Academics, craftsmen, working people, artists, alternatives, German and Turkish families live together in this atmospheric quarter in the former west of the city. Along the Landwehrkanal you will find one of Berlin's most attractive areas, Paul-Linke-Ufer. Beautiful old apartment blocks, cafés and restaurants give the canal bank its irresistible appeal. On the opposite bank, Maybach-Ufer, the famous Turkish market takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

On the Kreuzberg itself, a hill Viktoriapark, stands the National Memorial to the Napoleonic Wars by Schinkel. A waterfall crashes dramatically down a slope. Bu the main attraction for young people here is Golgatha, a fashionable disco with an open-air section the summer, regularly featured in the Institute's activity programme.

Prenzlauer Berg: Prenzelberg, as its inhabitants affectionately call it, is Berlin's most densely populated area. It is an old Berlin quarter which since the 1960's has become the home of young radicals and intellectuals, nonconformists and artists, developing into a "Berlin Montmartre". Since the fall of the Wall, a typical mix of café-galleries, alternative neighbourhood bars and clubs of all kinds characterise the area. Once a well-kept secret, the charming quarter around Kollwitzplatz has become Prenzelberg's main tourist attraction. In the nearby former Jewish quarter, "Scheunenviertel", a nightlife has regained the flavour of the Twenties.

The Hotel Koschel, now the Sachsenhof, was home to many writers and artists in the Twenties. Christopher Isherwood, whose novel, "Goodbye Berlin", became the film "Cabaret", also lived in Schöneberg. Less well-known is that Marlene Dietrich, herself a cinema legend, was born in Schöneberg in an apartment near to the Institute. The market on Winterfeldplatz takes place on Wednesdays and Saturdays. It has become one of the places to visit in Berlin, and even early in the morning the cafés here are full.

Work Experience Programme

The Program combines a German course of minimum 4 weeks with work experience in a Berlin based company of 6, 8 or 12 weeks. Your host company will expect at least intermediate level proficiency in German for full-day on-the-job training. If your German is not yet on that level, you can either take a highly intensive course or extend the language training period. The work experience starts after you finished your German course. It is unpaid and lasts 6, 8 or 12 weeks. Placements in tourism, services, telecommunications, marketing, graphics and design, social work. German at intermediate level required. 4, 8 or 12 week programme.

Guest Studentship

On completion of a 12 week programme, we can arrange a guest studentship for one or more terms at a Berlin university or institution of higher education.

Academic Year Programme

Teaching Methodology

The method of teaching is communicative in small groups and is based on the simple fact that speaking generates language. Rôle plays and intensive conversation training are an integral part of every programme. At the same time, appropriate grammatical and lexical progression is taught.

The Programme

All students take a grading test on arrival. Courses build on the 4 fundamentals: oral comprehension, writing, reading and speaking. Free class discussions, role-playing and conversation help develop verbal expression, vocabulary and good sentence structure. Grammar is not studied in isolation, rather it is packed in informative and stimulating texts that provide valuable cultural, political and historical background. Some topics covered include: relationships, social life, jobs and labour, history of Berlin, cultural identity. You learn in international groups with an average of 8 students per class. Classes run all year round, Monday to Friday with 4 daily lessons from 9:15 to 12:30, with a short break. Starting Dates: any Monday, all year round except for complete beginners, with starting dates once a month.

Leisure and Activities

City of the Dancing Bear, capital of Prussia, cultural metropolis of the twenties, Reichstag, Berlin Wall, reunification, old and new capital. Today, Berlin is all these things plus more - the gateway to Eastern Europe.

Berlin is culture. Only Berlin has three opera houses and two concert halls, 35 large and hundreds of independent theatres, numerous variety and musical theatres.

Berlin is relaxation. Rarely does a capital have so many parks, forests and recreational lakes such lovely surroundings for walking, cycling and resting.

Berlin is nightlife. In 300 "in" places, 1500 bars and countless clubs and discos, one can turn the night into day without the threat of 'closing time'. One can dance to techno and to pop and pub crawl from designer bars via beer gardens to quaint backyard pubs.

Berlin is a museum. The many large and small galleries display from modern to ancient art. Different epochs of history and fields of interest can be viewed in 130 museums. The streets of Charlottenburg, Kreuzberg, Mitte and Prenzlauerberg invite you to take part in their cultural scene.

Berlin is a market. No other city offers so many art, antique and flea markets and weekly fruit and vegetable markets for culinary shopping pleasure.

The Institute organises weekly excursions, usually in Berlin. During the summer months further leisure activities are offered - sport, cooking together, swimming and excursions etc.

A small reception is arranged each month to help participants attending the various German programmes to get to know each other.

In addition, Berlin offers an unparalleled and divers cultural, sporting and culinary scene to be explored by its visitors.

Radolfzell on Lake Constance

German summer programmes in a charming villa. The centre in Radolfzell is situated next to the City Garden of Radolfzell. You can enjoy the view of the lovely Old Town directly from our schoolyard. The well kept, three storey, building dates back to 1903 and provides a high standard of facilities.

Radolfzell on Lake Constance

Radolfzell, with its 27000 inhabitants, is situated in the south of Germany on Lake Constance, just near the Swiss border and Black Forest and in magnificent countryside.

Lake Constance is one of the most beautiful holiday regions in Germany and enjoys every kind of leisure and sports facilities, making it an ideal centre for young people. The lake offers great opportunities for windsurfing, sailing, swimming and water-skiing.  Cycle to the Black Forest or take a ride on a boat to neighbouring Switzerland or Austria. 

In the old part of town, the foreign visitor will find a lot of opportunities to try out his newly acquired knowledge of the language, for example, at the market place or in one of the typical wine bars in the evenings. 

About 15 kilometres away from Radolfzell, you can find traces of the great German writer Hermann Hesse and the equally well-known German painter Otto Dix. Visit the Hermann Hesse Museum in Gaienhofen or the Otto Dix Museum in Hemmenhofen. 

Just across the Swiss border, 20 kilometres away from Radolfzell, there is the small picturesque town of Stein am Rhein with its mediaeval features.  A few kilometres further on in Schaffhausen, you will come across Europe’s largest waterfall.  In about two hours, skiers and snowboarders can get to the winter sport resorts in Austria and Switzerland that are assured of snow. Go snowboarding in, for example, the place where the 1998 Olympic champion Gian Simmen lives. Or go carving in the White Arena. Golfers can choose from four different golf courses in the immediate vicinity of Radolfzell alone. And if you’re not afraid of travelling a few kilometres further on, then you will even have seven golf courses to pick and choose from.

The Institute

A magnificent building with eight classrooms, resource centre and modern language learning facilities including a language laboratory, interactive videos, multimedia computer and library. All teachers are experienced in teaching 'German as a foreign language' and are able to provide students with individual counseling. In addition, there is a cafeteria, international telephone access, fax, e-mail and internet. During breaks, we offer refreshments in the snack bar.

The centre in Radolfzell is situated next to the City Garden of Radolfzell, and you can enjoy the view of the lovely Old Town directly from our schoolyard. The well kept, three storey, building dates back to 1903 and provides a high standard of facilities. There are washing machines and tumble dryers in the basement which also houses the disco room.   

On the first floor there is an office for free time activities and a cafeteria (open daily from 10:00-10:30). On the second floor you will find the secretary’s office and a teachers´ room. On the third floor – a media centre with a language laboratory, a computer- and a reading-room. The international telephone is also on the third floor. There are eight well-equipped classrooms. The informal friendly atmosphere of this centre is always acclaimed by the participants.

ACTIVE LANGUAGE COURSE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE IN RADOLFZELL ON LAKE CONSTANCE

·         For young people from 15 upwards, in July and August.

·         German language course taught in a lively, interesting and varied fashion: 24 TU per week, one project day (whole day) per month, attractive holiday and sports programmes on 3 afternoons per week (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday) and all day Saturday.

Cologne

Cologne is a town for the young and for those who remain young at heart: open-air concerts, street theatres, beer gardens, bistros, discos.

Our modern Centre, with places for up to 160 students, is situated in the centre of town. A short walk will take you to the Rhine, the cathedral and the historical old part of town with numerous monuments from the Roman and mediaeval ages.  There are many different types of restaurants and shops in all price ranges near the Centre. Your host family is easily reached by tram or bus.

The Centre has very well-equipped, friendly classrooms and a large media library with numerous computers and educational programs, a library, a video library and a comprehensive amount of study material. In our cafeteria, you quickly get to know participants from other courses. In our secretary's office we offer you e-mail and fax service andCologne is town for the young and the young at heart. Open air concerts, street theatres and beer-gardens attract thousands of visitors in the summer. Student pubs, discos and live music draw people all year round.

In Cologne, over two thousand years of history await you, as well as the facilities of a modern economic and cultural centre: important trade fairs and exhibitions, famous museums, many large and small theatres. Cologne is well known for its "Karnaval". The openness of the Cologne people towards its visitors is legendary.

Cologne lies on the Rhine in the west of Germany. Due to its convenient location, it is within easy reach of its western neighbours - France, Belgium and the Netherlands - and other German cities. 

Cologne is also the ideal point of departure for day trips to the romantic Rhine with its castles and palaces, to wine tasting sessions on the Mosel or to the mediaeval towns in the delightful hilly countryside of the Eifel and the Bergisches Land regions surrounding Cologne.

Cultural and Leisure Programme

In addition to the teaching programme, we also offer cultural and sporting activities. Every month, the Institute has a welcome and a farewell party and other special evenings. Moreover, the Institute organises all kinds of sporting activities: football, or private horse-riding, tennis or sailing tuition. Obviously, the programme also takes in visits to museums, cinemas, theatres, rock concerts, large companies and interesting technical installations, and important trade fairs and exhibitions in the region. Once a month, there is a weekend excursion. Activities in the Institute are generally free whereas students contribute to external excursions and visits at cost price.

Work Experience Programme

Munich

The Institute is situated in the heart of Munich in an historical building. It has very easy access from anywhere in Munich. The nearest underground station, with six different lines, is within one minute's walking distance from the school. 

In our 15 classrooms students from all over the world meet to learn German together. A student library is at the disposal of those who want to continue their studies after the lessons and the teachers are always available with tips and advice.
