Situated on the delta of the River Neva as it flows into the Gulf of Finland an arm of the Baltic Sea, St Petersburg is on of the most magnificent cities in the world. Founded in 1703, the city later became the capital until this status was transferred to Moscow in 1918.
St Petersburg reflects the last 300 years of Russian life, history and culture, having close associations with Pushkin, Dostoyevsky and Merezhkovsk. It is home to the Russian ballet and has some hundred museums and permanent exhibitions, including the Hermitage and the Russian Museum. World-famous sights include the cathedral, where Peter the Great is buried, the Winter Palace, the Mikhailovsky Palace, the Summer Garden, the Smolny Cathedral and the Admiralty.
Today, St Petersburg is a friendly, open-hearted city with many international links. It is, for example, 'twinned' with Manchester, Edinburgh and Gdansk.
